COURSE OVERVIEW
As organisations strive to adapt to the ever-increasing challenges of globalisation, the need for skilled and qualified human resources professionals increases. This course aims to fill a gap in this much needed area of specialisation. The curriculum will provide you with sound knowledge and necessary skills that will enable you to work professionally in settings related to human resources. The programme takes an inter-disciplinary approach towards work and human resources, including perspectives from management, sociology, organisational psychology, education, economics, statistics, public policy, law, accountancy, and health and safety among others. Your knowledge and skill development will be assessed through different types of assessments including individual and group assignments, exams, presentations, projects, practicals and dissertation at the end of the programme. The programme will cover: Work, Labour Market and Society; Organisational Behaviour and Development; Industrial and Employee Relations; Design and Occupational Health and Safety; Personal and Occupational Skills Development; and Research.

Communication and Academic Skills Programme
The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.
 
LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of the course, you will:

• Gain knowledge about the principles and areas of social science, Evaluate the major theories of work and their relevance to Malta, Examine the contribution of objective quantitative information towards a democratic state, Understand the basic principles of Economics, and Discuss the different perspectives on economic development.
• Understand the role of the human resource manager within an organisation, Learn the major aspects involved in the recruitment and management of human resources, Learn basic financial management and capital budgeting.
• Identify the main grounds of discrimination at work, Recognise the importance of group roles, Learn how to communicate effectively, give presentations and work in a group, Learn the basic aspects of the collective bargaining process, Evaluate employee involvement practices.
• Recognise the responsibilities of human resource managers relevant to health and safety and workplace design and ergonomics, Assess the value of hazard and risk at the place of work and the laws that regulate health and safety, Identify and categorise abuse at work.
• Evaluate the major theories of motivation and compensation and apply them to work settings, Assess the effectiveness of training and development in a variety of organizational scenarios, Understand the meaning and implications of career choice and career development.
• Learn about the broad aspects of quantitative and qualitative research methods and how to plan and carry out an independent research project, learn how to analyse and reflect on given situations and how to work within limited time frames.
 
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AND ACCESS TO FURTHER STUDY The programme will enable you to work in various areas related to human resource management. It will also be beneficial to shop stewards and shop stewards and trade union leaders and member who will be in a better position to bargain and negotiate on behalf of their members. The knowledge and skills gained can also be used in the educational and training field within a culture of life-long learning. As a graduate, you will be able to enrol in programmes at masters’ level in related areas.
 
COURSE INTENDED FOR If you are interested in work and human resources or are already working in areas related to human resources management and wish to upgrade your knowledge, skills and qualifications, then this is the ideal course for you.
 
ADMISSION AND
PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics.

Applicants admitted under sub-paragraph (a)(iii) of paragraph (2) of regulation 2 of the Admission Regulations must be in possession of qualifications and experience that would satisfy the Board of Studies, through an interview, that they have reached the academic standard required to follow the Course with profit. Applicants admitted in terms of this paragraph shall be in possession of a pass in an English language proficiency test as approved by the University before being admitted to the Course,
provided that applicants in possession of a Secondary Education Certificate pass at Grade 3 or higher in English or a pass at the same standard in a comparable qualification, shall be exempted from sitting for the proficiency test.

Applicants in possession of the Diploma in Social Studies (Industrial Relations), the Diploma in Gender, Work and Society, or the Diploma in Social Studies (Gender and Development) of this University with an average mark of 60%, or a comparable qualification in an area related to Industrial Relations or Labour Studies or Gender Studies who have obtained credits for study-units considered by the Board of Studies to be equivalent to those in the programme of study may also be admitted to the Course. Subject to the provisions of the Principal Regulations, such applicants may be allowed by the Board of Studies to transfer these credits to the Course. The number of credits so transferred shall not exceed 60 credits.

Applicants in possession of the Diploma in Social Studies (Gender and Development) are required to obtain up to 16 credits as directed by the Board prior to acceptance on the Course.

Applicants in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause' are required to sit for an English Proficiency Test to be held in September 2020. Successful applicants will then be required to sit for an interview in September 2020. These dates cannot be changed. Such applicants shall be exempted from sitting the proficiency test if they are in possession of a pass at SEC level English at Grade 3 or better or equivalent. The closing date for receipt of applications from applicants in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause' (those who will be sitting for the proficiency test and/or interview) is 31 August 2020. The closing date for other applicants is 30 September 2020.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2020.
