DEPARTMENT Applied Biomedical Science

DESCRIPTION This is a practical study-unit. During each session, haematological and coagulation assays are carried out. Students are expected to keep a logbook and report all the readings and results obtained.

Content:

• Specimen processing and laboratory flow
• Normal Blood and Bone marrow cell morphology
• The Erythrocyte, Leucocyte and Platelet – normality and its variations
• Haematinic deficiencies and Haemolytic Anaemias – CBC and morphological aspects
• White cell disorders, benign and malignant – CBC and morphological aspects
• Blood coagulation – interpretation of results
• Blood film preparation and staining – manual reticulocyte counting
• Differential white cell counting – normal and abnormal
• Tests for haemolysis
• Bone marrow preparation and staining –Erythrocyte Sedimentation rate (ESR)
• Manual Platelet counting
• Coagulation tests and concepts – PT, APTT, Clauss Fibrinogen, One stage Factor Assays.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this study-unit, students should be able to:

• Use good laboratory practice;
• Make use of equipment properly and safely;
• Explain the basic principles underlying each of the techniques used;
• Compose scientific laboratory reports;
• Follow accurately test protocols;
• List the limitations of each technique used; and
• Critically appraise the test results and discuss their significance.
