| DESCRIPTION | This is a practical study-unit. During each session, haematological and coagulation assays are carried out. Students are expected to keep a logbook and report all the readings and results obtained. Content: 鈥� Specimen processing and laboratory flow 鈥� Normal Blood and Bone marrow cell morphology 鈥� The Erythrocyte, Leucocyte and Platelet 鈥� normality and its variations 鈥� Haematinic deficiencies and Haemolytic Anaemias 鈥� CBC and morphological aspects 鈥� White cell disorders, benign and malignant 鈥� CBC and morphological aspects 鈥� Blood coagulation 鈥� interpretation of results 鈥� Blood film preparation and staining 鈥� manual reticulocyte counting 鈥� Differential white cell counting 鈥� normal and abnormal 鈥� Tests for haemolysis 鈥� Bone marrow preparation and staining 鈥揈rythrocyte Sedimentation rate (ESR) 鈥� Manual Platelet counting 鈥� Coagulation tests and concepts 鈥� PT, APTT, Clauss Fibrinogen, One stage Factor Assays. Learning Outcomes: By the end of this study-unit, students should be able to: 鈥� Use good laboratory practice; 鈥� Make use of equipment properly and safely; 鈥� Explain the basic principles underlying each of the techniques used; 鈥� Compose scientific laboratory reports; 鈥� Follow accurately test protocols; 鈥� List the limitations of each technique used; and 鈥� Critically appraise the test results and discuss their significance.
