| DESCRIPTION | This is a practical study-unit. Students will have a 3-hour practical session per week. During each session a different biochemical or genetic technique will be explained and carried out. At the end of the session students are expected to write a lab report discussing the test carried out and the results obtained. The practical list consists of: 鈥� Urinalysis & microscopy 鈥� Thin layer chromatography (TLC) 鈥� The measurement of glucose using the Glucose Oxidase method 鈥� Measurement of albumin using Bromocresol Green dye binding method 鈥� Serum protein electrophoresis 鈥� DNA extraction 鈥� DNA quality control (quality, quantity, integrity) 鈥� Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) 鈥� Post-PCR techniquesPrimer and assay design 鈥� Genetic Databases and Bioinformatics 鈥� Analysis of High Throughput Sequencing Data 鈥� Interpretation of realtime genotyping data Learning Outcomes: By the end of this study-unit, students should be able to: 鈥� Use good laboratory practice; 鈥� Make use of analytical equipment according to recommendations given by senior laboratory staff; 鈥� Explain the principles underlying each of the analytical techniques used; 鈥� Create scientific laboratory reports; 鈥� Identify and list the limitations of each technique used; and 鈥� Discuss and appraise the test results and discuss their significance.
