DESCRIPTION | This is a practical study-unit. Students will have a 3-hour practical session per week. During each session a different biochemical or genetic technique will be explained and carried out. At the end of the session students are expected to write a lab report discussing the test carried out and the results obtained. The practical list consists of: • Urinalysis & microscopy • Thin layer chromatography (TLC) • The measurement of glucose using the Glucose Oxidase method • Measurement of albumin using Bromocresol Green dye binding method • Serum protein electrophoresis • DNA extraction • DNA quality control (quality, quantity, integrity) • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) • Post-PCR techniquesPrimer and assay design • Genetic Databases and Bioinformatics • Analysis of High Throughput Sequencing Data • Interpretation of realtime genotyping data Learning Outcomes: By the end of this study-unit, students should be able to: • Use good laboratory practice; • Make use of analytical equipment according to recommendations given by senior laboratory staff; • Explain the principles underlying each of the analytical techniques used; • Create scientific laboratory reports; • Identify and list the limitations of each technique used; and • Discuss and appraise the test results and discuss their significance.
