| DESCRIPTION | Placement in the Pathology labs to observe and learn the practical aspects of working in a Haematology and Coagulation lab. General: - Sample receipt and processing; - Health and safety. Haematology: - Operation and maintenance of smear staining machines; - Operation and maintenance of cell counting machines; - Principles and operations of flow cytometry; - Manual processing of cerebro-spinal fluid. Coagulation: - Automated APTT testing; - Automated PT testing; - Coagulation Screen - special tests; - Other automated coagulation tests and procedures. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to expose students to the general running and administration of the haematology lab within the hospital pathology labs with a special focus on: - Specialised haematology tests; - Specialised coagulation tests; - Automation. This study-unit will allow students to experience the practical aspects of: - Sample receipt and processing; - Working in an emergency lab scenario; - Carrying out vertical audits of test procedures; - Documentation and incident reporting. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Report on the procedures used in special sample receipt and processing; - Interpret test results, equipment QC reports and equipment fault reports; - Report on vertical audits for different haematological tests; - Keep appropriate documentation; - Adhere to established incident reporting protocols. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Carry out a variety of haematology and coagulation tests, both manual and automated; - Work efficiently within a haematology lab, including an emergency setting; - Carry out case studies, collating the necessary data which will determin the sequence of further testing; - Determine the urgency of sample requests and establish an appropriate testing schedule.
