DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will provide the student with the necessary knowledge underlying the analytical practical procedures used in the area of Transfusion Medicine. Content: • Manual antibody identification and titration methodologies • Direct Antiglobulin Test • Selecting blood components • Red cell antigen – antibody detection (semi-automated) • Manual phenotyping red blood cells (Patients) • Separation and preparation of blood and blood components • Adsorptions and Elutions. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the study-unit the student should be able to: • Describe the principles of the most frequently used pathology laboratory tests used in haematology and transfusion science together with their diagnostic significance; • Carry out these tests; and • Explain the theory and practical aspects of blood transfusion and cross matching.
