DESCRIPTION | The 'Dissertation and Project' in Social Practice Arts is an investigation of interrelationships between theory, practice, education and community or participatory arts. Students work on a creative project focusing on theatre, visual art or a mixed approach and support it with rigorous research methodologies and critical reflections, which should clearly demonstrate linkages between historical or theoretical frameworks and practical work. The artistic project forms the groundwork of academic research and is expected to be rooted in community-based or collaborative activities and methodologies emerging out of social research and contemporary theories of art and education. The written dissertation is meant to show evidence of the students' ability to bring together data gathered from their project, their theoretical and historical knowledge of specific art-forms, critical education and an awareness of the potential of social interventions through the arts. The combined dissertation and project also demonstrate the students' ability to work imaginatively and responsibly within their role as cultural producers. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit aims to: 1. Give students the possibility of studying a specific issue in depth through artistic and participatory practices and critical research; 2. Apply research methodologies in the arts and/or social sciences to a specific research question and subsidiary questions; 3. Develop a community-driven project that fosters a professional approach to working with others through visual art and/or theatre. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. Describe, analyse and evaluate an artistic research project conducted in a social setting; 2. Comprehend and discuss the pedagogical implications and goals of a chosen artistic project; 3. Plan and effectively implement the various stages of an artistic, participatory research project, meeting standard criteria of good practice; 4. Research relevant texts and contexts in the chosen area of study; 5. Apply research methodologies as required, advancing the field of study through the process of obtaining new data. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. Articulate clearly in written form the qualities that make one's chosen area of research relevant to social practice arts and critical education; 2. Reach appropriate conclusions about linkages between artistic practice and chosen theoretical frameworks; 3. Document own practice and analyse its relationship with the work by other visual arts and/or theatre practitioners.
