DESCRIPTION | In the course of this study-unit students critically and collaboratively engage with discussing and reviewing salient principles and established approaches that feature in the assessment of adults participating in open and networked higher education programmes. Students will be guided in collaborative and networked development, implementation and evaluation of assessment resources targeted at adults participating in higher education, open and networked learning programmes and will gain exposure to online technologies that support development, implementation and evaluation of adults participating in higher education, open and networked learning programmes. The outline below gives further details: - Rationalising the assessment of adults participating in open and networked higher education programmes; - Principles and types of assessment, with attention to reviewing the extent of which these foster collaborative and networked teaching and learning in higher education; - Exposure to online resources that support assessment of adult students participating in open and networked higher education programmes; and - Development, implementation and evaluation of (online and blended) assessment resources for adult students of open and networked higher education programmes. Study-Unit Aims: - A critical and collaboratively developed reflection on the role and purposes of assessment in the contexts of open and networked higher education; - Practical, collaborative and networked engagement with the development, implementation and evaluation of assessment resources targeted at adults participating in open and networked higher education programmes; and - Exposure to online technologies that support development, implementation and evaluation of adults participating in open and networked higher education programmes. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Critically discuss characteristics, strengths and weaknesses of assessment approaches used to assess adults participating in open and networked higher education programmes; - Identify and critically reflect on considerations that need to be factored in when developing, implementing and evaluating assessment resources and media targeted at adults participating in open and networked higher education programmes; - Critically consider and discuss characteristics, strengths and weaknesses of digital technologies supporting development, implementation and evaluation of learning in consideration of open and networked higher education programmes. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Critically review principles, approaches and resources characterising case studies of assessment resources implemented in open and networked higher education contexts ; - Develop online or blended assessment resources (relevant to assessing adults participating in open and networked higher education programmes) by drawing on collaboration with peers and/or networks; and - Critically consider and discerningly use information from (case study / simulated) assessment submissions to provide quality feedback to adult learners participating in open and networked higher education programmes.
