DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will introduce students to information development management, with particular reference to IT project development in the public sector. After identifying the nature and uses of information in a public sector organisation, and the different types of information systems, the students will be guided throughout the process of acquiring, implementing and maintaining information systems. Alternative methods of acquiring information systems will be explored and analysed. The importance of information systems maintenance is highlighted. The legal framework within which information systems are used, with particular reference to data protection, copyrights and patents, will also be examined. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to enable students reading for the BA (Hons) Public Sector Accounting to appreciate the importance of information technology and information management within public sector organisations. In particular, the study-unit aims to expose the students to the detailed planning process required for an IT project to be successfully designed, developed and implemented. The study-unit also aims to increase awareness regarding the legal framework surrounding IT projects, with particular reference to data protection, copyrights and patents. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain the nature and uses of information in a public sector organisation; - Describe the types of information systems in public sector organisations; - Describe the process of planning, acquiring and implementing information systems; - Outline the legal framework within which information systems are used, with particular reference to data protection, copyrights and patents. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyse the different options available to an organisation of a given case study, regarding the acquisition and maintenance of an information system; - Prepare plans required by an organisation of a given case study, in order to successfully acquire, implement and continuously manage an information system; - Write progress reports to the management of an organisation of a given case study, at each stage of the project.
