DESCRIPTION This study-unit delves into the development of Accounting Theory (both deductive and inductive theories) and explores behavioural research in Accounting. Further areas covered are approaches to the measurement of income, asset valuation bases, capital maintenance concepts, and the relevance/variations of these topics in a public sector context. The characteristics of historical cost accounting, current purchasing power, accounting, and current cost accounting are described.

The study-unit shall also explore further issues/developments related to financial reporting, in particular, corporate social responsibility reporting; human resource accounting; employee reporting; integrated reporting and popular reporting.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to consolidate prior knowledge of financial reporting, by exposing the students to theoretical arguments, accounting literature, and emerging financial reporting practices. The study-unit thus aims to develop the argumentative faculties of the students regarding accounting concepts and practices, as applicable in the public sector context.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Distinguish between deductive and inductive theories of accounting;
- Describe different approaches to the measurement of income;
- Explain the different bases used for asset valuation;
- Identify the advantages and disadvantages of different types of accounting systems (historical cost; current purchasing power; and current cost).

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Provide advice regarding the applicable approach to measure income and value assets;
- Prepare outlines for different types of reports, for example, corporate social responsibility reports; employee reports; integrated reports; and popular reports.
