DESCRIPTION This study-unit gives students an in-depth knowledge of the way in which management accounting can play a fundamental role in ensuring organisational effectiveness. Traditional and contemporary management accounting tools will be critically analysed with a view to applying them within a range of organisational settings.

Study-unit Aims

This study units aims to discuss, criticise and appraise the following aspects of Management Accounting theory and practice:
- The framework of management accounting.
- The applicability, impact and validity of alternative cost accumulation systems.
- Decision theory and decision making techniques.
- Product pricing and profitability reporting.
- The impact of IT on management accounting practice.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) Explain how management accounting information can be made relevant for both to operational and strategic decision-making.
b) List the different cultural and environmental conditions faced by organisations and select the appropriate management accounting tools.
c) Describe the contribution that IT applications can make towards generating relevant management accounting information.

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) Carry out detailed calculations using sophisticated management accounting techniques to generate relevant decision making information.
b) Analyse operational performance using an array of management accounting tools.
c) Generate and interpret reports which can contribute to improved operational efficiency.
