DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to the most eminent music philosophers and the music curriculum at every level of education. This study-unit is an overview of Music Education in school settings. Students learn concepts and approaches to the development and organisation of the music curriculum for general music and special subject option. This study-unit provides a structured opportunity for students to develop innovative and original curriculum resources. The position of music within the curriculum is also explored during the programme of studies.

The proposed programme of study is intended to develop students鈥 understanding of pedagogy focusing on key areas of how pupils learn and how to support their progress. The programme of study will provide opportunities for students to plan and teach well-structured lessons for all levels of music education. The study-unit promotes practical engagement whilst developing understanding of the theoretical perspectives which underpin the best models in music teaching. The students鈥 teaching and learning will be extended to subject matter, use of particular strategies and use of equipment in relation to current educational initiatives.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To introduce students to the eminent philosophers and pedagogues in music education.
- To provide students with an in-depth grounding in all fields of the music curriculum.
- To introduce student teachers to the music curriculum so that they will be able to apply it within the general teaching situations and settings.
- To prepare students to be the music educators of today and tomorrow.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- exhibit knowledge of different philosophies of music education and develop a personal philosophical foundation for one's career.
- review and classify current methods and materials available in all fields and levels of Music Education.
- establish the process involved in becoming a successful music teacher through the acquisition of a basic traditional and contemporary knowledge of practical teaching techniques and the opportunity to observe and work under successful members of the music teaching profession.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- organise, interpret, synthesise and evaluate knowledge in music education music education.
- plan curriculum and instruction, through planning of sequential schemes of work, lesson plans and learning activities.
- deliver effective instruction.
- identify concepts and skills needed for the learning activities.
- use technology appropriately.
- draw results of assessments to identify teaching strategies.
- plan strategies for integrating students with disabilities in the music classroom.
- demonstrate competence in oral, written and communication skills and theability to disseminate knowledge in a scholarly manner.
- demonstrate the ability to evaluate and conduct research in music education.
- identify appropriate reading materials and resources for promoting further learning.
- manage classroom environment.
- promote equity.
- meet professional responsibilities.
