DESCRIPTION | This study-unit shows students how music can be taught and integrated into other areas of the elementary school curriculum. This unit introduces students to a comprehensive module covering music fundamentals as well as materials and methods for teaching music in the elementary school. It focuses on how children learn and presents popular, easy- to- use techniques for teaching singing, ensemble playing, movement, creativity and listening. The study-unit addresses music teaching from a technological and multicultural prospective, focusing on cultural diversity and relating and integrating music with the arts in the entire elementary curriculum. Study-Unit Aims: - To provide student teachers with a sound grounding in educational philosophies, classroom methods and materials associated with the predominant pedagogical and technological advancements of the elementary music curriculum. - To outline the importance of placing music in an integrated learning environment, which will contribute to meaningful and long-lasting experiences for learners. - To engage student teachers in pedagogical and musical practices that are relevant, contemporary and innovative, focusing on singing, movement, listening,creativity and performance. - To examine the potential impact of creative digital technologies on music pedagogy in the 21st century music elementary classroom Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - develop musical and pedagogical skills that will students for professional careers as music teachers in the elementary school. - gain knowledge and understanding of pedagogical methods and techniques applied to a variety of musical classes and ensembles found in he elementary school, as well as practical knowledge in teaching music in the field. - discuss teaching skills related to music education that have influences in current practice. - review a number of internationally recognised approaches to teaching music. - identify recent approaches reflected in informal learning, multiculturalism and help student teachers gain a new perspective on integrating music into their daily teaching experiences so that they will grow in knowledge, sensitivity and understanding of themselves in the teaching profession. 2.
