DESCRIPTION | This study-unit offers each music student teacher a course that develops musical knowledge, understanding, creativity and musicianship skills needed to be an effective music teacher in the twenty-first century. Students will be encouraged to develop their improvisation skills in a theoretical and practical way through musical content and innovative pedagogical practices of instrumental techniques and musical skills. This study-unit introduces students to the varying ways in which notated and improvised music co-exists and interacts in historical and contemporary musical styles and traditions. The improvisation class will give students the opportunity to develop improvisation skills and techniques in a variety of styles both on their principal study instrument and at the keyboard. In addition, students will be able to reflect upon, discuss and develop knowledge of the issues relevant to instrumental music education by developing skills in converting sound to notation and notation into sound through different musical performances in solo and ensemble contexts. Through the study of these practices, students will be exposed to musical cognition for developing a foundational understanding of the creative process in improvisation. Participants will also be also introduced to keyboard harmony from a practical perspective. Study-Unit Aims: - to provide training in the development of musicality and foster skills in active music making. - to correlate internal hearing with singing and pitch identification. - to increase perception and knowledge of music and encourage creative responses to it. - to provide a model of how Solfege can be taught in schools and gain further insight of the applicability of this approach as a teaching method. - to explore keyboard advanced harmony from a practical perspective at the keyboard and on the students’ principal instrument. - to foster skills and awareness of contextual listening. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - read, write and improvise music from a wide variety of styles. - gain knowledge of music theory as it relates to effective performance on their instrument. - list and select teaching strategies drawn from a variety of different styles.for solo,amd group ensembles. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - sing a piece of music at sight based on the tonal, modal, chromatic and atonal system - perform on an instrument with a high degree of professionalism - demonstrate proficiency on a primary instrument or voice in solo performance and in ensembles. - perform and transcribe music from a wide variety of styles.
