DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces students to pedagogical and technological skills to help student teachers develop skills, concepts and instructional methodologies in music theory teaching. This study-unit offers specialised study in music theory to help prepare students to teach undergraduate courses in Fundamentals, Harmony, Musicianship and Basic Form analysis.The study unit which reflects both the philosophical and practical ideals offers students the possibilities to gain a focused knowledge of teaching music theory both through theoretical and practical practices. Student teachers will acquire the necessary skills for classroom teaching. This study-unit will provide a structured opportunity for students to develop creative new approaches to teaching music theory, and encourage active student participation with contemporary contexts such as flipped classrooms and popular music studies. The proposed programme of study which is intended to develop students' understanding of music theory pedagogy on key areas of approaches, techniques, materials, curriculum design and assessment practices will help student teachers learn how to meet the needs of diverse learners and incorporate technology into their pedagogical practices. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims: - to re-think music theory pedagogy and promote change in the teaching approach towards the 21st century music student. - to prepare student teachers to teach music theory and aural skills in the core music curriculum in secondary schools, in studio environments, in specialised schools and in higher education. - to develop the essential skills in order to integrate music literacy into performance and ensembles. - to develop teaching proficiency through practical experiences in a practicum setting. - to introduce students to many of the pedagogical techniques in Music Theory that are emerging through research and classroom experiences. - to prepare students for an integrated approach of composing, performing, listening and analysing both in the face-to-face classroom as well as online teaching environments. - to draw on pedagogies that reflect the diversity and pluralism inherent in 21st century music makings. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - develop a personal philosophy toward teaching music theory - review and classify current methods and materials available in all field levels of music theory teaching - establish the process involved in becoming a successful music theory teacher through the acquisition of a basic traditional and contemporary knowledge of practical teaching techniques and the opportunity to observe and work under successful music theory teachers. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - identify concepts and skills needed for the learning activities. - gain a working knowledge of a range of current textbooks in music theory instruction. - gain practical classroom teaching experience in teaching music theory. - use technology appropriately. - draw results of assessments to identify teaching strategies. - plan strategies for integrating students with disabilities in the music classroom. - identify appropriate reading materials and resources for promoting further learning.
