DESCRIPTION Objectives:

There is an increasing acceptance that primary products should be produced in ways that are sustainable and compatible with health and environmental concerns. This study unit will enable to students to familiarize themselves wutg such practices and the relevant options available to producers.

Contents:

This unit provides an overview of Good Agricutlral practice (GAP) and recognized standards of production with special reference to meeting he reuirements of the Maltese and European markets. Consideration will be given to animal husbandry and the processing of animal products as well as agronomic and post-harvest techniques with reference to health and environmental issues. Social welfare issues will also be considered. GAP will be discussed with respect to codes of practice and industry self-regulation, including sector-specific and company-specific standards and issue-specific management plans. An examination of typical protocol requirements, including traceability, hygiene practices, pesticide use, fertilizer, manure and water use will be made. Assurance schemes and the certification process will also be dealt with. Moreover health and safety issues will be given particular importance
