Study-Unit Description

Study-Unit Description

CODE AGR3300

TITLE Agro-System Modelling

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT Rural Sciences and Food Systems

DESCRIPTION This study-unit includes theoretical and practical tools for studying, analysing and managing agro-ecosystems. Today, agricultural systems are managed through spatial modelling that will assist the producer in achieving a high quality product with the minimal use of resources. The students will be instructed on the use of GIS modelling and remote sensing.

Study-unit Aims

This study-unit will:

- present the basic concepts of system analysis and modelling;
- enable students to be aware of various options for agriculture spatial data visualization;
- provide students with an appreciation of the crop data format, including raster and vector data;
- develop students’ understanding and appreciation of the role of geospatial data in the study and management of agriculture.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- define elementary GIS and GPS theories;
- demonstrate basic GIS analysis and modeling concepts;
- demonstrate basic ArcGIS and QGIS applications;
- express the use of remote sensing as primary crop information.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- read maps and take precise measurements;
- use basic survey instruments to create elementary maps and site plans;
- use GIS software to organize, manipulate, display and store spatial data;
- evaluate the use of remote sensing techniques for rural landscape applications;
- process geographic data for GIS mapping to uncover patterns, trends, and relationships in the data.
