DESCRIPTION The study-unit is based on an intensive programme of reading and written work which is related to the student's specific field of research. It is conducted on an individual basis. Tutorials will be held every fortnight to discuss at length the material which the student is researching and writing on. The candidate will be expected to write a research dissertation of 50,000 words with a value of 80 ECTS credits on the topic under investigation. The choice of the topic which will be related to the interdisciplinary field of Anglo-Italian Studies will require the approval of both the Chair and the Director of the Institute.

Study-unit Aims

- To give the candidate the opportunity to explore in depth the subject /theme under investigation;
- To test the candidate's ability to undertake guided research in a chosen (and approved) field of study;
- To give the candidate the opportunity to show originality and research potential in a particular field of study related to the interdisciplinary field of Anglo-Italian Studies.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the broader field of Comparative Literature with a particular focus on Anglo-Italian Studies;
- Apply a wide range of theoretical and critical approaches to the subject / theme under investigation;
- Apply a variety of research techniques to the topic being researched;
- Formally articulate in writing the research results in a coherent and systematic fashion.

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate critical skills in the analysis of a broad range of texts in more than one language;
- Discuss complex critical issues in a coherent and convincing manner;
- Present both in writing and orally the research results;
- Apply his or her refined expressive potential to related fields within the Humanities.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings

The aim of the dissertation is to give the student the opportunity to conduct individualized research under the supervision of a specialist in the field. The readings will therefore be determined by the subject or theme under investigation and a reading list will be provided.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
