DESCRIPTION | Teaching methods: 1. Classroom-based integrated teaching sessions aimed at imparting a sound and details knowledge of pelvic anatomy, especially with relation to the fetal head. The programme of lecture is designed to address pelvic anatomy with special relevance to women's health. The lecture programme is not designed to be comprehensive but teaching sessions are structured as a basis and impetus for further study while encouraging clinical correlates observed in an actual teaching hospital setting. Specifically, this study-unit will provide a sound knowledge of the anatomy of the pelvis, as well as the different types of pelvis, which is very important to midwifery. This study-unit will also cover the important aspects of the fetal head and the neonatal skull, which is important during the engagement of the head during a normal delivery. Study-unit Aims: - The study-unit aims to impart a sound knowledge of the bony pelvis, as well as the different types of pelvis, including the relevance of this to obstetrics; - It will also cover the anatomy of the various organs present in the female pelvis, especially the reproductive organs, bladder and rectum; - It will cover basic imaging of these organs. The relation of the fetal head with respect to the pelvic anatomy will be covered in detail, as well as the anatomy of the neonatal skull. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. Describe the anatomy of the uterine blood supply; 2. Discuss the structures supporting the pregnant and non-pregnant uterus; 3. Describe the different parts of the bony pelvis; 4. Describe the different types of pelvis; 5. Describe the relationship of the female genital organs to other structures in the pelvis, namely bladder, ureter and rectum; 6. Know the different diameters of the presenting part of the fetal head during engagement, and its relation to the pelvis; 7. Describe the anatomy of the neonatal skull. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to have the following specific general competences: 1. Outline the procedure for pudendal nerve block - demonstrating on a model if necessary or; 2. Performing a bimanual palpation of the uterus; 3. Interpret different modes of pelvic imaging; 4. Examine the scalp of a neonate. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: - Clinical Anatomy by Regions, Richard. S. Snell, 8th Edition. January 2007, Lipincott.
