DEPARTMENT | Anatomy | ||||||||
DESCRIPTION | This study-unit highlights the functional inter-relationships among bones, joints, the muscles, and nerves to form units responsible for the movements of the body as this relates to the lower limbs. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the anatomical structures of the lower limb, with a particular focus on their clinical relevance. It will also equip students with the practical skills required to apply anatomical knowledge to the clinical assessment and interpretation of lower limb function and pathology. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the detailed anatomy and key interrelationships of the bones, joints, muscles, blood vessels, and nerves of the lower limb, especially in regions commonly affected by injury or disease; - Explain the anatomical and physiological basis of clinically significant musculoskeletal conditions, particularly traumatic injuries and common disorders affecting the lower limb. 2. Applied Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe and demonstrate the principal movements of the lower limb, along with the corresponding muscles, nerves, and joints involved; - Conduct a basic physical examination of the lower limb, including joint function, muscle strength, and neurological testing; - Map and assess the dermatomes and myotomes of the lower limb, and distinguish between peripheral nerve injuries and individual spinal nerve root lesions; - Evaluate vascular function in the lower limb by palpating major arterial pulses and discussing the clinical implications of ischaemia at key anatomical sites.
