DESCRIPTION | Each student reading for MA in Global Maritime Archaeology shall be required (within six months of commencement of the course) to submit a working title for his/her dissertation. The Dissertation carried out in the third semester will be centered on a substantial piece of work which the student, under supervision, will research and write up. The topic to be researched can come from any of the branches of the multidisciplinary programme of studies leading to an MA in Global Maritime Archaeology, so long as a suitable supervisor can be found. Students will be assigned a tutor after discussion with the course coordinators. Study-unit Aims: - To prepare students for the undertaking of a substantial piece of original research; - Train students in the development of research frameworks and methodologies to be used for original research. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - to write a formal research/project proposal; - analyse and utilise primary and secondary sources; - to systematically locate and critically appraise work related to the chosen subject; - manifest originality in thought processes, development of methodologies and innovative approaches to research; - communicate research theories and notions effectively and precisely both in writing and verbally. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - discuss essential debates at symposia and conferences; - to carry out original research; - plan, execute and write up research that is up to publication standard; - to work on one own initiative; - to work diligently under pressure, master time management and respect deadlines. ADDITIONAL NOTES | **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners. | ||||||||
