DESCRIPTION This unit commences by addressing the role of history and culture in determining an organisation’s position. It will then review an organisation’s position by taking into consideration the external environment both from a macro environment and industry/sector perspective. The study-unit will then provide an overview of the resources and capabilities that determine strategic capability and will critically discuss how strategy is influenced by states of governance, stakeholder expectations and business ethics. More specifically this unit will debate how competitors shape business strategies, and how organisations broaden define their corporate portfolios. A special consideration will be to the phenomenon of internationalisation.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit introduces the multifaceted topic of strategy from various disciplinary perspectives and explains the role of organisational processes in the operationalisation of strategies. It aims to spark the students' interest, enabling them to better understand the content of other study units within the Higher Diploma course, and to explore the topic at more advanced levels, as practitioners or students. It also aims to provide the students with an opportunity to develop necessary teamwork and communications skills, enabling them to effectively engage with peers and a wide variety of business audiences.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Define strategy and discuss the role of strategies within organisations;
- Distinguish between different types of strategies, describing their characteristics;
- List the links between strategies and processes within organisations, and how processes operationalise strategies;
- Illustrate a wide range of concepts, principles, theories, frameworks, models and techniques used for the analysis, establishment and management of strategies and the contexts framing them.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply knowledge gained to comprehend an organisation's strategic standing;
- Examine organisations' policy frameworks and processes, developing sound opinions regarding the extent to which the processes operationalise the existing strategies, while acknowledging possible strengths and weaknesses relating to such opinions;
- Articulate and present proposals for improvements in organisations' strategies and process, orally and in writing, to business and academic audiences;
- Perform research to deepen knowledge and understanding on matters relating to business strategy and organisational processes.

Students are encouraged to deepen their understanding by reading a selection of additional texts recommended in the text book, and by performing independent research, identifying additional literature, especially from renowned sources.

Additional Reading:

Throughout the course, relevant reading from academic journals and other sources will be presented to students in-class or via the VLE.
