| DESCRIPTION | Managerial skills are highly transferable, goal-oriented and results-driven. They are ever more sought-after by employers and they transcend the workplace, to impact and be useful in any aspect of life. They are also in continuous evolution, to remain contemporary and to follow the fluid nature of the workplace itself. This study-unit will provide students with the skills required to operate effectively in a managerial position within the workplace. Study-unit Aims: The aims of this study-unit are to: - Enable students to take a holistic approach to prepare for future career challenges that come with any managerial role, regardless of the position, the industry, the country; - Provide an opportunity for students to practice managerial skills within simulated managerial contexts such as presenting, reporting, and public speaking. These aims will be achieved using a mix of case studies, assignments and teamwork. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Appreciate the difference between management and leadership; - Delegate work and tasks; - Define effective guidelines for a given team; - Be aware of the different leadership styles and when to apply them; - Develop a framework for effective decision-making; - Design team operations and procedures; - Critically discuss the value of Emotional Intelligence and Cultural Intelligence for effective management; - Apply coaching and mentoring principles to support your management objectives; - Establish a team culture based on trust, quality, and service; - Create a team community that inspire innovation and continuous learning. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Manage a group of people; - Establish a work agenda for excellent time management; - Prioritize work and tasks; - Communicate with confidence; - Resolve team conflicts; - Problem solving with innovation thinking; - Be empowered to work in culturally diverse workplace; - Give and receive feedback; - Focus on continuously delivering value and removing waste from a project; - Lead a team effectively with clarity of objectives; - Define a team strategy and keep it on track. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: This study-unit does not require mandatory textbooks. Student are encouraged to: - Access ample free resources Online (shared in class); - Regularly read publications like the Harvard Business Review and The Economist; - Read & listen to business podcasts (shared in class). |
