DEPARTMENT Banking, Finance and Investments

DESCRIPTION This study-unit explores the evolution of the financial services industry, where the traditional functions of banks are being increasingly claimed by other types of service providers. Notwithstanding this, banks are still distinguishable from other types of institutions in terms of the applicable regulatory requirements and their inherent characteristics which make them particularly prone to various kinds of financial risks. The study-unit discusses the salient financial risks which are relevant to the banking industry, the assessment of such risks, and how their management is linked to the wider objective of shareholder wealth maximisation.

The three main areas covered are:
• the contemporary financial services environment and key strategic drivers of modern banking;
• the analysis of bank financial performance and related strategic management aspects;
• the application of theoretical models and risk management techniques to financial risk management and bank decision-making.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to offer students a theoretical and practical understanding of the various types of risks applicable to a financial services firm, as well as the assessment of such risks.

These objectives will be achieved by offering a background of the current strategic aspects concerning the global financial services industry and a thorough discussion of financial performance assessments and the management of different kinds of risks.
