DESCRIPTION | The study-unit is an advanced unit that looks at banking regulation. It covers all the aspects from theory to reviewing and discussing specific banking legislation applicable in the EU and Malta. It takes into account the latest developments in the field and uses practical bank cases to illustrate the issues related to banking regulation in a modern financial market. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit aims to provide students with advanced knowledge of banking regulation, especially following the change in regime after the 2007/08 financial crisis. It aims at covering all aspects of banking regulation from theoretical justification to how banks are effectively regulated. The study-unit also aims at covering important aspects of the new banking regulatory environment with the ECB and the single supervisory mechanism. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the rationale for banking regulation; - Explain the impact of regulation on the growth of international banking; - Explain the concepts of governance, risk and management in the context of banking regulation; - Describe the principles of home and host country regulation and supervision; - List and explain international banking cooperation; - List and explain the duties of the ECB and the national competent quthority in the context of the banking union. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Evaluate the impact of specific banking regulation on market participants; - Interpret specific banking regulation; - Translate banking regulation requirements into operational policies for banks; - Assess which compliance activities are required by banks in order to comply with all relevant banking regulation.
