DESCRIPTION This study-unit covers all the important aspects that students have to grasp and understand when working in financial institutions, in particular banks. This study-unit provides a good description and analysis of all the important operational challenges that financial institutions encounter in their day-to-day operations. This study-unit provides a good mix of theoretical and practical issues which will enable students to be prepared to work in the modern financial, regulatory and economic environment.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims at providing participants with a good grasp of the current financial and economic environment and the place occupied by banks in the ever growing globalised economy. Apart from going into certain basic aspects of the financial world, the course also aims at providing a robust understanding to the different types of banking operations which are available in the market and a detailed analysis of the most important risks which are faced by banks on an everyday basis. Students will be provided with a solid overview of the current legal structure regulating the business of banking, and how the relative banking authorities interact, both locally as well as in Europe. An emphasis on the different type of banking products will also be made.

1. Knowledge & Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the main regulations regulating banks;
- Discuss the various project finance methods that are used by companies and their legal and financial implications;
- Explain the various governance structures used in the financial services industry;
- Explain what is anti-money laundering and counter terrorism financing and how this is regulated in financial institutions;
- Outline the difference between deposit taking and non-deposit taking financial institutions;
- Discuss the importance of risk management in financial institutions;
- Explain what are syndicated loans and why they are used.

2. Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Advise on optimal governance structures in financial institutions;
- Outline which regulations apply to banks and financial institutions;
- Describe operational challenges encountered by banks and financial institutions and recommend courses of action to overcome them;
- Comply with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing regulations in financial institutions;
- Recommend risk management approaches in financial institutions.
