DESCRIPTION This study-unit consists entirely of supervised, laboratory-based practical sessions, with an in-depth focus on easel paintings.

During the sessions, the students will handle and use original materials and traditional tools to learn the process of making of a range of easel paintings. Students will primarily work individually but they will also be engaged in group exercises.

Workshops will include the following:
- development of observation skills;
- development of dexterity and practical skills;
- drawing exercises;
- handling and testing of traditional materials, such as adhesives, pigments and binders used in easel paintings;
- systematic examination of the technique of canvas and panel paintings.

These will be followed by a fully integrated exercise engaging with the entire process required to replicate a real canvas/panel painting or a sample of it.

Students will document their practical work in a journal.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Develop and improve manual skills and dexterity, with a specific focus on original materials and techniques of easel paintings;
- Engage the students in hands-on activities aiming at testing traditional materials and processes through empirical and experiential learning;
- Expose the students to the critical process leading to the making of a historically-accurate reconstruction/replication of a painting.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Be able to reproduce the basic steps involved in the making of a canvas/panel painting;
- Describe and critically discuss the steps involved during the making of a historically-accurate reconstruction of a painting;
- Recognize and describe materials and methods used to create a selection of easel painting using appropriate terminology;
- Recognise, record and discuss the working properties of a selection of traditional materials commonly used in easel paintings.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Produce replicas of a selection of canvas/panel paintings using traditional tools and techniques;
- Record and illustrate practical work through a journal;
- Examine a canvas/panel painting and describe the processes through which it was created.
