DESCRIPTION | This study-unit consists entirely of supervised practical work on site, on a real case study. This is selected among relevant and significant sites on the Maltese Islands. During the whole duration of the unit, students will study the site/building/decorative architectural surface with a holistic approach: Starting from the study of the context and physical history of the site/building/decorative architectural surface (also through literature and archival research as necessary), students will study original materials and techniques of the building/decorative architectural surface, including (but not limited to) stratigraphy, tool marks and paint application. They will document the building/decorative architectural surface with the tools learnt in previous units. At the end, they will be asked to produce a professional report. Such unit reflects the first steps which are taken in a conservation project, and therefore provides the students with a close insight into professional practice. Study-Unit Aims: - Develop a holistic approach to the study of a site/building/decorative architectural surface; - Apply knowledge gained through the various components of the curriculum of the Preparatory Programme; - Develop a professional, ethical attitude and bahaviour while approaching a cultural heritage site/building/decorative architectural surface. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify and describe relevant stages of the physical history of a site/building/decorative architectural surface; - Critically observe and describe a building/decorative architectural surface on site, including its original materials, stratigraphy, original technique; - Document with the appropriate tools a building/decorative architectural surface on site; - Identify and collect relevant information gathered on the site/building/decorative architectural surface. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: Compile relevant stages of the physical history of a site/building/decorative architectural surface, linking them to the current situation on site; - Discuss the original materials, stratigraphy and original technique of the real-case building/decorative architectural surface in light of what previously studied for similar kind of buildings/decorative architectural surfaces; - Apply appropriate tools to document the building/decorative architectural surface, adapting to the particular case, context and logistics on site; - Produce a professional report, linking relevant information and communicating them clearly.
