DESCRIPTION | This study-unit consists entirely of supervised practical work on a number of real panel/canvas paintings from museums and/or private collections. During the whole duration of the unit, students will study the paintings using a holistic approach, starting from gathering information on the art historical/historical context of the paintings, on their significance and on their physical history (also through literature and archival research as necessary). The students will then examine the original materials and techniques of the paintings by following a systematic approach and a well-established methodology used in the conservation field, starting from non-invasive methods of examination (i.e. visual examination, microscopy and multispectral imaging). The students will also learn how to organize the information gathered throughout the examination of the paintings in a systematic manner and will be asked to compile a professional report for each painting. The steps and activities carried out during this unit reflect those undertaken in real conservation projects, and will provide the students with a close insight into professional practice. Study-Unit Aims: - Provide a holistic approach and methodology for the study and examination of a range of easel paintings; - Introduce the students to the initial steps of a conservation project, aimed at understanding the technique and physical history of paintings, as well as their significance; - Help students develop a professional and ethical attitude when approaching easel paintings; - Apply knowledge gained through the various components of the curriculum of the Preparatory Programme. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Choose the appropriate methodology to examine the original technique and physical history of a painting; - Critically and systematically observe, describe and discuss the original technique and physical history of paintings; - Discuss the implications that the original technique and physical history of the paintings have on the assessment of the paintings' significance; - Collect and record the information gathered from different sources (e.g. archival research and visual examination). 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Correctly use a range of examination methods and tools; - Interpret, discuss and communicate the results of the examination of the painting; - Write a professional report by collating and interpreting the relevant information obtained throughout the examination of the paintings.
