| DESCRIPTION | The Dissertation carried out in the last year of studies of the Master of Conservation will be centered on an original piece of work, which the student, under supervision, will research and write up. The topic to be researched can come from any of the branches of the multidisciplinary programme of studies leading to the Master of Conservation, as long as a suitable supervisor can be found. Topics which can be considered include a hands on piece of work, a scientific-based issue, development of a new treatment, or a combination of these - other relevant topics are not excluded. The student will be expected to carry out a comprehensive literature survey, consult/interview suitable persons and carry out appropriate laboratory/site/studio work, as well as write up the original research. Study-unit Aims: This unit aims to asses the holistic understanding of conservation issues in a wider sense by applying knowledge and skills learnt throughout the Master's programme to an original piece of work. Research and writing skills will also be assessed. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Design and develop an original research project at an advanced level; - Explain clearly and fully the aims, methodology, results and conclusions drawn from the research programme; - Discuss with peers the positive and negative aspects of the research carried out. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Carry out meticulously all the background work which go into the preparation of the research project; - Execute skillfully and dexterously all practical aspects of the research project; - Prepare and present a professionally and academically sound write-up of the project carried out.
