| DESCRIPTION | Objectives: Lectures in this study-unit concern Baroque painting in Italy, France, and Northern Europe, and late Baroque achievements in the later seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, focussing on Italy and Spain. Early Baroque naturalism, and classicism and the great fresco cycles of High Baroque painting will also be discussed. Method of Teaching: 14 seminars of 60 min each, backed by discussions and site visits. Reading List: - R. Wittkower, Art and Architecture in Italy (1600 - 1750). Yale 1958 (with later eds.) - R. Huyghe, Larousse Encyclopedia of Renaissance and Baroque Art, Hamlyn, 1968. SEMESTER 2 The teaching sessions of the second semester will focus on the most important and obvious physical environment relationships that governed Baroque lifestyle in seventeenth and eighteenth century Europe. The first of these was the dialogue that was created between the ideally-planned military establishments, and the regular planning of the towns. The second relationship concerned the equally Dr.amatic dialogue that was after 1600 created between splendid Baroque palaces and man-made landscapes, now expressed in the form of carefully planned and maintained gardens and garden furniture. |
