| DESCRIPTION | This unit seeks to discuss museums, their history and their role in society, also analyzing current issues within museums. Students will look at different types and definitions of museums. The aim of this study-unit is also to discuss and analyze museum ethics and look at current issues in the philosophy of museums. During this unit we will also delve into the importance of research and physical conservation and how museums are used as educational mechanisms in society. Students will be asked to look at the museum experience both through the eyes of the institution and also the visitor. Different exhibition and museums will be visited to aid students in developing a critical eye. List of Lectures: 1. A definition of Museology and Museums 2. The History of Museums Representation of the Past 3. Understanding Museums Focusing also on the cultural aspect 4. Museums role in Society Perceptions 5. Interpretation of Cultural Objects 6. Current Issues in the philosophy of Museums, Museum Missions 7. Learning in the Museum Different types of intelligences 8. Education in Museums Different types of learning within Museums. 9. On site-Lecture to analyse what type of learning is provided for in a museum and how it can be improved upon 10. Research and Conservation within the Museum 11. Museum Ethics 12. Professional Ethics 13. Institutional Standards 14. Musealised Architecture Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to discuss museums, their history, their role in society, the types of research and physical conservation and also museums as educational mechanisms in society. The unit will look at the museum experience both through the eyes of the institution and also the visitor. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - demonstrate an understanding of museums and their history; - discuss the various roles of museums within society and debate the current issues involved in museums; - evaluate an exhibition critically.
