| DESCRIPTION | Students will be introduced to the development of Baroque theatre, the importance of accompanying music, the musical instruments of the age, the plays and ingenuous scenography, as well as the diffusion of theatrical forms in Europe. Study-Unit Aims: The Baroque period witnessed some spectacular developments in the musical field. The study unit aims to introduce the student to the evolution, development and legacy of baroque music and theatre and the effects of this ephemeral art form on the other more material arts. It will seek to bring forward the Baroque theatre as the high expression of the Baroque age, embracing within it plays, opera, ballet, feasts, religious ritual and street theatre. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study unit, the knowledge acquired will place participants in a position to appreciate the importance of spectacle in the Baroque age, this constituting one of the more important elements bridging all manifestations of political, military, religious and cultural activity of early modern Europe. 2. Skills: By the end of the study unit, participants would have gained sufficient critical skills to evaluate theatrical and musical performances associated with the Baroque age. They will also be in a position not only to understand their importance and impact on the contemporary scenarios of early modern Europe but also appreciate their still relevant value in the cultural scenarios of modern world. |
