DESCRIPTION | This study-unit, directed towards students reading for a postgraduate degree in Baroque Studies, will introduce students to different methods of conducting historical research. History writing does not simply involve putting data in paragraph form. This unit will introduce students to various concepts including the identification of sources, data interpretation and placing that data in a context. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to help students reading for a Masters of Arts in Baroque Studies to develop research skills, analytical skills and writing skills used within academic communities by highlighting and reflecting on the conventions and practices used in historical research. The unit also aims to introduce students to various analytical tools which will help them in their research at postgraduate level. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Differentiate between primary and secondary sources of literature; - Identify various sources of historical research; - Locate such sources within archives and libraries; - Identify the reliability of such sources. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Comprehend the significance of reviewing literature; - Identify a reliable methodology for their study; - Write a good essay with their own analyses; - Create a bibliography for their dissertation.
