DESCRIPTION This study-unit offers a comprehensive exploration of nerve conduction and electromyography (EMG) techniques, focusing on the technical and anatomical foundations required for clinical neurophysiological assessments. The study-unit begins with a detailed examination of the anatomy and physiology of peripheral nerves, including the effects of injury and disease on nerve conduction.

Students will gain hands-on experience in performing Electroneurography (ENG) studies, covering motor, sensory, and cranial nerve responses. This includes mastering electrode placement, stimulation points, equipment operation, and troubleshooting, along with the analysis of waveforms and conduction velocities. Special attention is given to the differences between adult and pediatric ENG procedures.

The study-unit also covers the anatomical basis of skeletal muscles and techniques for performing EMG studies, focusing on needle insertion, identifying abnormal EMG patterns, and understanding advanced parameters such as jitter, blocking, and fiber density. The unit concludes with case studies on neuropathic, myopathic, and neuromuscular junction diseases, providing practical context for applying these neurophysiological techniques in clinical practice.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to identify and describe the neurophysiological basis of nerve conduction and electromyography (EMG), and master the technology for nerve conduction studies and needle EMG studies. This includes a review of a range of relevant pathologies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe anatomical concepts of peripheral nerves and nerve conduction, and the effects due to injury and ailment on nerve conduction.

- Perform electroneurography (ENG) studies. This includes:
a.) Performing nerve conduction studies relevant to specific clinical presentations and syndromes;
b.) Analysing waveforms and conduction velocities recorded during ENG studies;
c.) Describing the differences between adult and paediatric ENG studies;
d.) Describing and applying techniques, including the setting up, electrode placement, stimulation points, operation of equipment and related fault finding, for recording:
• Sensory and motor nerve responses;
• Peripheral nerves later responses;
• Neuromuscular junction responses;
• Cranial nerve responses, including brainstem reflexes.

- Describe anatomical concepts of skeletal muscles, with emphasis to electromyography (EMG) needle insertion, and distribution of myopathic disorders depending on pathology.

- Perform EMG studies. This includes:
a.) Identifying the type of electrode to be used;
b.) Setting up electromyograph machine recording parameters;
c.) Describing and distinguishing between normal and abnormal EMG signal patterns (and related statistical values), and the related audio generated by the electromyograph;
d.) Describing the principles of jitter, blocking and fibre density measurement.

- Describe a mix of case studies inclusive of neuropathic, myopathic, neuromuscular junction disease as well as hereditary and acquired diseases.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Set up, perform and report an ENG study;
- Set up, perform and report an EMG study.
