DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to the principles of sustainability. It provides a synthesis of the principles of sustainability as they are applied in various sectors which include land use and complement the practices related to land management. The broad scope of this study unit provides the foundation for the short course award in Sustainable Land Management.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to provide an overview of sustainability principles through their application in a number of sector that are directly related to and complement land management. It starts from the historical development of sustainable development as a concept. It provides the students with a critique of the main concerns about sustainability. It the aims to examine sustainability in sectors such as transport and mobility, waste and energy management, water and so on.

The study-unit aims to provide the students with perspectives of sustainable development in economic, social and environmental terms.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- list the stages of development of the concept of sustainability;
- demonstrate how the principles of sustainability can be applied in various fields;
- explain the importance of sustainability.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- report on matters related to sustainability through an assignment at the end of the study-unit;
- compare practices from a sustainability point of view with respect to land management;
- analyse indicators of sustainability from a number of perspective.
