DESCRIPTION | This study-unit covers the clinical sessions in paediatric dentistry and orthodontics. Students will be expected to keep a logbook of paediatric and orthodontic dental procedures carried out in clinics. Students will be expected to keep a logbook with a minimum 30 first-time orthodontic patient assessments as a compulsory part of this study-unit. They will also be expected to assess and treat a minimum of 10 removable appliances cases with a case-load comprising expansion cases, functional appliances, correction of crossbite (anterior and posterior) cases and extraction/retraction cases. Students will be expected to keep a logbook of paediatric dental procedures carried out. These shall include: - 8 Fissure Sealants; - 5 Preventive Resin Restorations; - 2 Pulpotomies; - 2 Pulpectomies; - 5 Amalgam restorations - Primary Molars; - 5 Composite Restorations - Primary Molars; - 4 Class III composite restorations; - 2 Incisor Composite Build-Up Restorations. Study-unit Aims: - Be able to diagnose orthodontic problems and formulate a treatment plan; - Apply the principles of support, stability and retention in orthodontics; - Manage clinically removable orthodontic appliances; - Be able to manage dento-alveolar trauma; - Carry out intra- and extra-coronal restorations in the child patient; - Carry out endodontic management of the child dentition. The study-unit discusses the clinical management of specific dental malocclusions, including principles of anchorage, functional appliances, orthognathic surgery and principles of stability and retention. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain the principles of management of the Immature Apex; - Describe the management of Molar Incisor Hypoplasia and the ectopic first permanent molar; - Explain issues of child abuse and the spectrum of oro-facial injuries in child abuse; - Discuss the role of the general practitioner to recognise and react to suspected abuse; - Describe the diagnosis and management of Dental erosion; - Discuss the use of Fluorides in the paediatric patient; - Describe the principles of treatment of young first permanent molars in terms of caries, pulp or periradicular involvement; - Explain the role of dental care professionals within Special Care Dentistry; - Explain the features characteristic of a select group of special needs conditions; - Describe the principles of obtaining a comprehensive history and examination of a child who has suffered dento-alveolar trauma; - Explain the indications for further investigations, emergency care and follow-up treatment for the trauma patient. Orthodontics During this year the student will acquire further knowledge of Orthodontics and orthodontic techniques, specifically, the student will acquire competence in: - Aetiology of Class 2 and Class 3 malocclusions and the principles of treatment; - Aetiology and treatment of ectopic teeth; - Orthodontic stability and retention. - Basic principles of advanced Orthodontic Techniques:     - Fixed appliances;     - Treatment of Orthognathic cases. - Dentofacial Orthopaedics. The student will take on selected patients for treatment and apply knowledge gained in order to plan treatment and carry a treatment plan out to a successful conclusion. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Assess and manage dentoalveolar trauma in the child and adult patient and recognize cases of non-accidental injury; - Manage cases presenting with Molar Incisor Hypoplasia, Imature apex and ectopic first permanent molars; - Manage treatment of the young permanent dentiton; - Show competency at managing the dental treatment of the Special Health Care Needs patient; - Competence in the treatment planning and management of a case of a missing central incisor in a child or adolescent incorporating consideration for their expected growth and development; - Competent at diagnosing dental anomalies with knowledge of their prevalence and management options; - Competent at diagnosing dental erosion and the ability to advice regarding preventive measures and treatment options according to severity of tooth surface loss; - Report the aetiology, assessment and treatment of the discoloured dentition. - Carry out the following procedures on models by the end of the First Semester:     - Fissure sealant;     - Preventive resin restorations;     - Class I amalgam filling restoration;     - Class II amalgam filling restoration;     - Class II composite resin restorations;     - 1 Pulpotomy in a primary molar;     - 1 Pulpectomy in a primary molar. - Carry out the following procedures in the child patient by the end of the Second Semester:     - 8 Fissure Sealants;     - 5 Preventive Resin Restorations;     - 2 Pulpotomies;     - 2 Pulpectomies;     - 5 Amalgam restorations - Primary Molars;     - 5 Composite Restorations - Primary Molars;     - 4 Class III composite restorations;     - 2 Incisor Composite Build-Up Restorations. ADDITIONAL NOTES | A pass in this study-unit is required before registering for CDO4134. Co-requisite Study-unit: DNS4036 Please note that a pass in both Oral Examination components and the Clinical Practice Examination component is obligatory for an overall pass mark to be awarded. Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below. |
