DESCRIPTION This study-unit covers the clinical training in paediatric dentistry and orthodontics. It consists of sessions with patients in the clinical setting. Independent study-time is also factored in. Students will be expected to keep a logbook with a minimum 30 first-time orthodontic patient assessments as a compulsory part of this study-unit.

Study-unit Aims:

The student will acquire further clinical skills through clinical practice and attendance at consultant clinics building on the knowledge acquired in the previous years. The emphasis of this study-unit is to increase competence through clinical exposure.

The student will be taught the skills to prepare and deliver a presentation about a Child dental health topic. The student shall be able to discuss the topic with peers. Further teaching includes orthodontic diagnosis, preventive techniques and management of malocclusions and treatment of emergency presentations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Child Dental Health

- Discuss the range of preventive/interceptive procedures in the orthodontic/paedodontic interface;
- Describe soft tissue lesions and disorders of the oral cavity in the child patient;
- Explain their diagnosis, aetiology, investigations required and management including when to refer;
- Explain the causes of infection, mechanisms and routes of spread of infection;
- Discuss the principles of management of infections in the head and neck region;
- Discuss pyogenic oral infections and indications for referral;
- List the functions of the dental surgeon in a multidisciplinary cleft lip/palate team;
- Design a treatment plan and management of a case of a missing central incisor in a child or adolescent incorporating consideration for their expected growth and development;
- Prepare a presentation about a Child dental health topic to an audience;
- Deliver the presentation about a Child dental health topic to an audience.

Orthodontics

- Discuss limited developmental or acquired dento-alveolar, growth-related and functional abnormalities of the primary, mixed and permanent dentition;
- Explain how to diagnose orthodontic treatment need;
- Explain contemporary treatment techniques;
- Explain how to design, insert and adjust space maintainers and design;
- Explain how to insert and adjust active removable appliances to move a single tooth or correct a crossbite;
- Explain how to treat simple crowded cases by means of extractions and tooth retraction;
- Discuss the principles of treatment of dento-facial anomalies including the common orthodontic/maxillofacial procedures involved.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Diagnose dental anomalies with knowledge of their prevalence and management options;
- Identify the pertinent features in a child or adolescent relating to potential orthodontic problems;
- Restore primary and permanent teeth in a child patient;
- Manage a cleft lip/palate patient;
- Manage the missing central incisor;
- Manage limited developmental or acquired dento-alveolar, growth-related and functional abnormalities of the primary, mixed and permanent dentition;
- Diagnose orthodontic treatment need;
- Design space maintainers;
- Insert and adjust space maintainers and design;
- Insert and adjust active removable appliances to move a single tooth or correct a crossbite;
- Treat simple crowded cases by means of extractions and tooth retraction;
- Identify pernicious oral habits that may exacerbate malocclusion, and prevent their consequences through patient education and training and appliance therapy, as needed;
- Manage appropriately all forms of orthodontic emergency, including referral when necessary.

Within the orthodontic component, students will be expected to assess and treat a minimum of 10 removable appliances cases with a caseload comprising expansion cases, functional appliances, correction of crossbite (anterior and posterior) cases and extraction/retraction cases.

Within the Child Dental Health component of this study-unit, students will be expected to have carried out the following clinical procedures:
- 5 Preventive resin restorations;
- 2 Pulpotomies;
- 2 Pulpectomies;
- 5 Amalgam restorations – primary molars;
- 5 Composite restorations – primary molars;
- 2 Incisor composite build-ups of traumatised teeth;
- 2 Stainless Steel crowns.

The total number of the various clinical procedures expected to be carried out over the 3 Child Dental Health study-unit components are the following:
- 16 Fissure sealants;
- 14 Preventive resin restorations;
- 5 Pulpotomies;
- 4 Pulpectomies;
- 12 Amalgam restorations – primary molars;
- 12 Composite restorations – primary molars;
- 4 Class III composite restorations;
- 2 Incisor composite build-ups of traumatised teeth;
- 2 Stainless Steel Crowns.

ADDITIONAL NOTES In order for students to be awarded an overall pass in the study-unit, they need to satisfy the following conditions:
• obtain an overall pass in both components (Child Dental Health and Orthodontics) of the Clinical Assessment and Treatment Planning of Hidden Case Component;
• obtain an overall pass in both components (Child Dental Health and Orthodontics) of the Oral Examination Component; and
• obtain a pass in the Paediatric Clinical Practice Assessment Component.

Co-requisite Study-unit: DNS4133

Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.
