DESCRIPTION | The study-unit introduces the students to air pollution in the urban environment, its origins and its effects on humans and materials. This unit focuses on traffic-related issues describing primary and secondary air pollutants, their sources' concentration determination and modelling. Modelling of air pollution from vehicular sources is a practical experience. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to give students an idea of the tools to apply in assessing urban pollution especially from vehicular sources through data base analysis and modelling. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify primary and secondary air pollutants in the urban environment and their sources; - Describe mitigation measures for these pollutants; - Describe methods measurement of pollutants in an urban environment; - Compare measured values of pollutants with limit values set by EU legislation; - Calculate effective emission factors for important pollutants from vehicular emissions. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Use databases to extract appropriate data; - Use appropriate software to model vehicular pollution in a geographical setting; - Prepare an environmental impact assessment for an urban traffic environment. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: - Glasson,J., Therivel,R. & Chadwick, A. 2012. Introduction To Environmental Impact Assessment, Ed 4. Taylor & Francis Ltd - Documented Software Notes appropriate to that used by the students in their modelling. |
