DESCRIPTION | China is an East Asian country with a large territory, a huge population and an ancient history. With written records dating back 4,000 years, it is recognized as one of the four great ancient civilizations of the world, together with ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and India. Moreover, it is the only ancient civilization that has continued to this very day.The scope of this course is to provide a general overview of the Chinese history and civilization. The class will be addressed according to the dynasties, which include, Xia, Shang, Zhou, Qin, Han, Three Kingdoms, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming, Qing, Republic of China, People's Republic of China. Study-unit Aims 1. To arouse the students’ curiosity and interest in Chinese history and civilization. 2. To help the students appreciate critically the main characteristics of Chinese history and civilization. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. appreciate the overall aspects of Chinese history and civilization. 2. grasp the most important technical terms used in the study of Chinese history and civilization. 2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. appreciate Chinese history and civilization. 2. compare Chinese history and civilization with those of other countries, especially with Maltese history and civilization. 3. appreciate other cultures in general.
