TITLE Appreciation of Chinese Culture

DESCRIPTION The scope of this study-unit is to provide a general overview of Chinese culture. The selected topics include: Chinese wisdom and beliefs,such as Confucian thought, Laozi's philosophy, Sunzi's art of the war, the Temple of Heaven: Reverence with Awe and Gratitude; Chinese creativitity and exchange, for example, Chinese Characters, The Silk Road, The Great Wall and The Forbidden Ctiy; Chinese arts and aesthetics, such as martial art, music instruments, opera,the art of cooking, painting, calligraphy, the famous grottoes (Buddhist cave shrines), and the tea culture. Classical Chinese films will be introduced from time to time.

Study-unit Aims

1. To arouse the students’ curiosity and interest in Chinese culture.
2. To help the students understand the concept of Chinese culture.
3. To introduce the students to a number of basic cultural terms in Chinese.
4. To offer a critical appreciation of the various cultural terms discussed in this study-unit.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. know the core concept of Chinese culture.
2. have a grasp of the most important technical terms of Chinese culture.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. appreciate Chinese culture, such as music, film, painting and calligraphy.
2. compare the Chinese culture with other cultures, especially with the Maltese culture.
