DESCRIPTION This study-unit examines the evolving labour market from various perspectives. For example, it focuses on the changing demographics in Malta and in the EU and it explores how these changes are affecting the labour market. The unit also delves into the future of work and emerging forms of employment contracts. An examination of Malta's unemployment, inactivity and activation policies is carried out in the context of the European Employment Strategy.

In order to enable students to track the changes in the labour market they will be taught to read and interpret labour market statistics and data captured through the NSO and Eurostat websites.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit introduces students to the analysis of labour market trends through the interpretation of official labour market statistics. Labour market developments in Malta and the EU are discussed in the context of the European Employment Strategy. The study-unit focuses on a range of issues relating to the labour market, including demographic change, work-place reorganisation and emerging forms of contracts.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- assess how the labour market is evolving in Malta and in the EU;
- understand the EU Employment Strategy;
- discuss the Employment and Training Corporation's activation policies;
- elicit the main demographic factors that are impacting on the labour market;
- read and interpret the Labour Force Survey and Eurostat Data.

2. Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to interpret demographic and labour-market trends captured through the National Statistics Office (NSO) and Eurostat data.
