DESCRIPTION | This study-unit seeks to bring together theory and practice in the study of organisational behaviour and its relationship to health and safety. The study-unit focuses on diverse issues related to occupational and health psychology and enables participants to develop an understanding of the behaviour of workers in organisations, and of the relationship between worker attitudes and health and safety practices at work. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit aims to introduce students to the topic of organisational behaviour and facilitates an understanding of its relevance and importance to occupational health and safety. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Delineate the importance of studying human behaviour in an organisational context and the role of organisational behaviour in health and safety practice by means of practical occupational examples. - Define and interpret the relevance of the following topics to workers’ occupational health whilst discussing by means of occupational case-studies how these topics could be tackled through OHS interventions: social psychology; personality; attitudes; perception; aggression; job satisfaction; commitment; motivation; stressors; addiction; and burnout. - Interpret the theories of human information processing, decision making, learning and memory and apply these to OHS case studies. - Distinguish among the various dimensions of personality, their relevance to workplace health and by means of practical exercises evaluate methods of personality assessment within an occupational setting. - Evaluate and analyse work systems, tasks and job roles by means of case studies. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Appraise the complex relationship between the individual, the workplace, and occupational health. - Carry out personality, ability and behaviour analysis of individuals in work settings through relevant tools and different methodologies. - Identify psychosocial stressors by means of applied OHS assessment. - Enhance analytical skills through the appraisal of relevant case studies and practical examples.
