CODE CLS2306

TITLE Practical Skills and Application

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Centre for Labour Studies

DESCRIPTION The study-unit allows students the opportunity to practice health and safety techniques taught in earlier units in real work settings including: risk management and principles of control, aspects of occupational safety, ergonomics, fire safety, the management of first aid, investigative skills, and general OHS legislative requirements.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to:
- Provide participants with the ability to attend selected workplaces and report on specifically assigned work in order to improve their practical skills.
- Allow students an opportunity to review major aspects of study of the degree programme in a holistic manner.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to integrate the principles learnt from previous units and apply these within practical work settings by evaluating specific work settings and their health and safety implications in a holistic manner through the completion of a portfolio of risk assessments. Participants shall thus recall various hazards, acknowledge any interaction between such hazards, and distinguishing between levels of risk within specific work settings. This shall be achieved through examining and integrating information on: risk management and principles of control; occupational safety; ergonomics and human factors; fire safety; the management of first aid; investigative skills; and OHS legislative requirements.

By means of a portfolio, students shall identify and suggest relevant control measures for the identified hazards and risks within a variety of specific work settings.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify hazards, quantify risk and suggest control measures where needed in a variety of workplace settings.
- Identify examples of good practice as well as legal shortcomings in various work settings.
- Conduct ergonomic assessments, thus identifying ergonomic hazards, risks and suggest solutions.
- Conduct fire management assessments, identify fire hazards, risk and suggest solutions.
- Determine the level of legal OHS compliance in a variety of work settings.
