DESCRIPTION Having covered health and safety management systems in CLS2305, this unit complements the aforementioned unit by addressing the issue of auditing. The unit thus introduces participants to health and safety audits and tackles the purpose, design, techniques and review of such systems. In each case, the associated national and international standards are discussed.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to:
- Introduce participants to health and safety audits and their scope;
- Discuss the design, techniques and reviews of such systems, including both the associated national and international standards.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Discuss the concept of continual improvement in health and safety during a final assessment and how this can be applied within different sectors and organisations of different sizes;
- Explain during discussion and a final assessment the purpose of health and safety auditing, including internal and external audits, and how it fits within different health and safety management systems;
- Comprehend the purpose of performance targets, benchmarking, and how these are identified within a variety of organisational settings;
- Establish during analysis of case studies and a final assessment, methods for developing relevant questionnaires and interview guides for different industries and the analysis of documented policies, operational procedures and standards;
- Appraise the development and implementation of action plans with a variety of organisational settings by means of case studies and a final assessment;
- Compare various national and international auditing standards and discuss their design, techniques and review systems during a final assessment;
- Establish methods for documenting information during class discussion and a final assessment.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Carry out relevant interviews and questionnaires;
- Analyse previous audit reports, documented policies, operational procedures, performance standards and company records;
- Observe and inspect workplace; evaluate operational, technical and performance standards, and compliance with management policy, legislative and regulatory requirements. Review welfare and well-being activities;
- Develop recommendations based on audit results, develop and implement changes;
- Write audit reports, submit these and conclude stakeholders' meetings.
