DESCRIPTION This study-unit enables students to further explore current regulations pertinent to employment and industrial relations in the Maltese and European context.

This unit covers various topics including the different forms of employment contracts, their termination and the role of the Industrial Tribunal. Furthermore, it will delve into relatively newer legislations including the Whistleblower Act and selected issues of Subsidiary Legislation under Chapter 452. The unit will also go into specific areas of industrial disputes as resolved by the Industrial Tribunal.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to:
- Build upon and update the existing knowledge of students with regards to employment and industrial relations regulation;
- Expand such knowledge to key issues and ancillary areas complementary to the place of work;
- Ensure a practical and theoretic approach to the way Malta regulates the area;
- Consider the European Institutions and their effect on employment and industrial relations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Delineate the importance of employment regulations both from a local and a European perspective;
- Interpret the objectives of such employment legislations and its application in sustaining a system of good industrial relations both in Malta and in the wider European Union context;
- Distinguish the link between several social legislative acts;
- Expand further in-depth knowledge of employment and industrial relations legislation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Keep up to date with the evolving social legislation and deriving main benefits and entitlements due to citizens;
- Guide themselves and others with regards to main legislation related to the social policy sphere;
- Apply employment and industrial relations legislation in practical situations as practitioners;
- Critically examine practical situations in employment and industrial relations.
