Study-Unit Description

CODE CLS3119

TITLE Applied Quantitative Research Techniques

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT Centre for Labour Studies

DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on the various essential aspects of quantitative research, including: summarizing the data, the shape of a distribution, comparing samples and analyzing relationships. Some major parametric and non parametric tests are examined. The study-unit includes a strong practical element, through which students learn how to use the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit equips students with the basic statistical concepts and techniques used in the quantitative study of social phenomena. It trains students in the use of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS).

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- discuss the strengths and limitations of quantitative research methods;
- value the significance of basic concepts in quantitative research;
- assess the utility of different types of data in quantitative research;
- distinguish basic parametric and nonparametric statistical techniques to analyse quantitative data.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- construct surveys that lend themselves to statistical analysis;
- carry out data entry, data handling, analysis and inspection in SPSS;
- select, carry out, and interpret the appropriate statistical techniques to examine quantitative data;
- apply a range of inferential tests such as t-tests, tests of correlation, tests for nominal data etc.;
- report the results in a clear format using appropriate tables and charts.
