| DESCRIPTION | Participants shall work in small groups and will be allowed to select any subject matter of their choice from subjects delivered throughout the first three and half years of the degree course and are expected to research this in further detail. Other topics deemed relevant to occupational health and safety which do not feature within the course may also be chosen at the Centres' discretion. Students are expected to conduct this research via self-study and group-study under the guidance of the lecturer and shall be expected to provide class presentations of their progress and findings. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit aims to: - Further enhance the participants' knowledge in a topic of their choice which has been covered in the first three and a half years of the course or has not been carried out but is considered of relevance to occupational health and safety; - Foster group learning through the process of group study and presentations; - Improve ability to carry out scientific literature search. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to synthesise and critically evaluate subject matter relevant to occupational health and safety. This shall either consist of a topic covered in the course but covered in much greater depth with greater critical analysis or of a novel topic which does not feature in the course but which must be researched in as great a detail. In each case students working in small groups shall demonstrate by means of a series of assessments a more complete appreciation for the assessment of their chosen topic, as well as any relevant interventions to foster greater health and safety and their interaction with their greater organisational system. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Carry out a scientific literature search and screen studies for methodological quality; - Critically evaluate theories and principles; - Solve complex problems relevant to the chosen area of study; - Further develop teamwork through researching within small groups; - Foster presentation skills and analytical ability through group class discussion; - Develop an attention to detail due to the depth and scientific rigour of the research; - Conduct assessments and suggest interventions that demonstrate a great depth of knowledge and synthesis of the chosen topic and consider the wider organisational system rather than analysing the chosen topic in isolation. (2009) Writing up Qualitative Research, Sage Publications (3rd Edition). Reading for this study-unit will primarily consist of scientific papers and will be dependent on the topic chosen by the participants. |
