Study-Unit Description

CODE CLS3303

TITLE Advanced Practical Skills and Application

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Centre for Labour Studies

DESCRIPTION The study-unit allows students the opportunity to practice health and safety techniques taught in earlier units in real work settings. Students are expected to build on knowledge and skills gained through CLS2306 "Practical skills and application" by demonstrating greater competence in assessment and identification skills along with advanced suggestions for health and safety interventions. Students’ assessments and suggested interventions are to incorporate and tackle the following topics: occupational hygiene; occupational health; environmental health management; health and safety management; properties of material; and technical drawings.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to:
- Provide participants with the ability to attend workplaces and report on specifically assigned work in order to improve their practical skills;
- Allow students an opportunity to review major aspects of study of the degree programme in a holistic manner;
- Assist students in building a portaolio of risk assessments and proposed control measures.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Present a portfolio of holistic risk assessments based upon specific workplace visits. This will involve identification and critical analysis of various hazards, solving complex interactions between such hazards, and distinguishing between levels of risk within a variety of often unpredictable work settings. Workplace assessments are to encompass the following topics: occupational hygiene; occupational health; environmental health management; health and safety management; material properties; and technical drawing.
- Present suggested control measures or interventions for the aforementioned conducted workplace assessments which take into consideration their complex and unpredictable nature.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify multiple hazards, their interaction, quantify risk and suggest comprehensive control measures where required in a complex and unpredictable practical setting. The identification of such hazards and the suggested control measures or interventions should relate to the following topics: occupational hygiene; occupational health; environmental health management; health and safety management; material properties; and technical drawing.
- Prepare comprehensive portfolios detailing the above.
- Communicate and defend findings of workplace assessments and proposed interventions, demonstrating critical understanding of the applied theories and principles.
