| DESCRIPTION | This unit focuses on the applied and practical side of qualitative research whilst allowing students to analyse their work and improve it. This unit allows students to reflect on their research question and how it links to the literature review and its critical analysis. It helps students to draw up open ended questions and conduct a sound data gathering process. The unit also introduces students to Thematic Analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) and Computer Aided Qualitative Data Analysis (CAQDAS) using Nvivo whilst highlighting the principles of qualitative writing and presentation. Study-unit Aims: The aim of the study-unit is to sharpen and refine the qualitative research skills of students who will be using this approach in their thesis. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify the building blocks of sound qualitative research; - Demonstrate an understanding of what makes a good literature review which is well linked to the key research; - Become aware of what makes a good Interview Guide using open-ended questions; - Identify informants and learn how to interview them and write up verbatim transcripts; - Categorise and present qualitative data in meaningful clusters using Thematic Analysis; - Identify computer aided software to facilitate the qualitative data analysis process; - Demonstrate an understanding of what makes a good findings, analysis and discussion chapter; - Identify the strengths and limitations of a qualitative project. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Write a Masters dissertation following sound qualitative research principles; - Write a sound literature review which is well linked to the key research question; - Draw up an Interview Guide using open-ended question in line with qualitative principles; - Gather data from informants and transcribe it efficiently; - Use Thematic Analysis in order to code and categorise data in meaningful clusters, possibly using Nvivo 10 to do so; - Write up the Findings, Analysis and Discussion chapter using sound research results which are well supported with quotes and which are well linked to the literature review.
