DESCRIPTION | This study-unit involves a clinical placement carried out during the second year of the programme of study. Students are primarily involved in active observation and guided participation. Depending on the individual students' abilities, active observation should lead to guided participation towards the end of the placement. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of the clinical aspects of speech and language therapy. It aims to introduce students to various speech-language pathology settings and serves as a bridge between lecture-based learning and real-world clinical practice, offering students the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical setting. Students are encouraged to observe clinical sessions and to familiarise themselves with hands-on practice. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - gain exposure to the daily operations of a speech and language clinic, observing professionals as they assess, diagnose, and treat clients with communication disorders; - observe specific areas of client behaviour with guidance from the clinical practice educator; - observe and discuss (with the clinical practice educator) different methods of gathering information including case history taking, assessments,language samples, linguistic analysis etc; - identify long term and short term goals related to the client's communication needs; - recognise the rationale behind these goals and the activities and resources required to reach these goals; - discuss the general management of clients. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - apply different methods of information gathering, including case history taking, assessments, language samples, linguistic analyses, etc.; - interpret this information with guidance from the clinical practice educator; - carry out activities set and supervised by the clinical practice educator; - devise activities to target goals identified in conjunction with the clinical practice educator; - participate in record keeping, report writing, and routine clinical administration; - report and discuss therapy programmes with the clinical practice educator, clients and carers.
